Elisabet Stacy-Hurley at Benjamin Art Gallery

Elisabet Stacy-Hurley was born in Iceland of an Icelandic mother and an American father.  When Elisabet was a toddler, her parents moved to the United States and spent her childhood living in West Virginia, Illinois, Virginia, and Maryland.  She attended Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus, Ohio on an awarded scholarship.  After leaving the college, she worked as technical illustrator and photographer in Hagerstown and Gaithersburg for twenty years before concentrating on sculpture and painting. 

Her Icelandic background is the basis for her passion to capture landscapes of Iceland, Norse mythology, and fantasy worlds with magical elves, trolls, and witches.  Elisabet also draws inspiration from Maryland scenes such as river beds with sycamore trees stretching across the water, the soft-spoken grace of a white iris growing adjacent to an oak tree, the hierarchical battle amongst a gaggle of geese, etc.  She also enjoys “mindscapes,” which allow her to dive into any realm of life, imaginary or real.  Although the artist painted using watercolors for 15 years, her preferred and primary media is oil. 

Elisabet lives with her husband, Robert Hurley, in a country home in Boonsboro, Maryland.  Together, they thoroughly enjoy breeding, raising, and caring for their six Icelandic Sheepdogs.  She also regularly teaches oil painting classes.
